Frequently asked questions
How long do you boil an egg?
For a large egg from the fridge, lowered into boiling water: about 5 minutes for runny, 6 for soft-boiled, 7 for jammy, 9 for medium and 11 for hard-boiled.
Does egg size change the time?
Yes. Medium eggs need about a minute less and extra-large eggs about a minute more. Room-temperature eggs cook a little faster.
Can I see the time from across the kitchen?
Yes. The timer is drawn as a pan of water that drains as the eggs cook and turns amber in the last ten seconds, and full screen fills the display. The digits stay in the middle, and you can tap them to type any time.
Why put eggs in ice water?
An ice bath stops the cooking so the yolk stays exactly how you timed it, and it makes the eggs easier to peel.
