Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked on a time card?

For each day, subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time, then subtract any unpaid break. Add the days together for the weekly total. This calculator does all of that automatically and handles overnight shifts that end the next day.

Why does my payroll use decimal hours?

Payroll multiplies hours by an hourly rate, which needs a decimal number. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours (45 ÷ 60 = 0.75). The calculator shows every total in both hours-and-minutes and decimal hours.

How is overtime calculated?

Under the US federal rule (FLSA), hours over 40 in a workweek are paid at 1.5× the regular rate. California also requires 1.5× for hours over 8 in a day and 2× for hours over 12 in a day. Choose the rule that applies to you; state and contract rules vary, so confirm with your employer.

What is time-clock rounding and the 7-minute rule?

Many employers round punches to the nearest 5, 6 or 15 minutes. With 15-minute rounding (the “7-minute rule”), 1–7 minutes past the quarter hour round down and 8–14 minutes round up. Pick a rounding option to match your employer’s time clock.

Is my time card saved?

Yes — your entries are saved in your own browser, so they are still there when you come back. Nothing is sent to a server.
