Frequently asked questions

How is overtime pay calculated?

Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly rate × multiplier. At $20/hour with 46 hours worked and a 40-hour threshold, you have 6 overtime hours at $30 (1.5×), so $180 overtime plus $800 regular = $980.

What is time and a half?

Time and a half means 1.5 times your regular hourly rate. Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must be paid at least time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek.

When is double time paid?

Federal law doesn't require double time, but some states and contracts do. California, for example, requires 2× pay for hours over 12 in a workday. Use the time card calculator for daily California overtime.

Is overtime calculated per day or per week?

Federal overtime is weekly (over 40 hours). A few states, such as California, Alaska, Nevada and Colorado, also have daily overtime rules. Set the threshold to 8 to calculate a single day's overtime.
