Frequently asked questions

What makes a year a leap year?

A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except for century years, which must also be divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2000 are leap years, but 1900 and 2100 are not.

Why do century years have a special rule?

A solar year is about 365.2422 days, slightly less than 365.25. Skipping the leap day in three out of every four century years keeps the Gregorian calendar aligned with the seasons over the long term.

How many days are in a leap year?

A leap year has 366 days because February gains an extra day, February 29. A common year has 365 days.

When is the next leap year?

Leap years occur every four years, with the century-year exception. This tool lists the next eight leap years for any year you enter, so the next one is always one click away.
