Frequently asked questions
What is golden hour?
Golden hour is the period shortly after sunrise and before sunset when sunlight is soft, warm, and directional — ideal for photography. TimerHub shows both morning and evening golden hours.
Are the times shown in local time?
Yes. Times are displayed in the selected city's local time zone. If you use your device location, they're shown in your device's time zone.
Why are some times missing near the poles?
During polar day or polar night the sun may not rise or set at all, so those values can't be computed for that date. The dial shows it instead: under the midnight sun the ring stays lit all day, and in polar night it may show only twilight around noon.
What are civil, nautical and astronomical twilight?
They are the stages of dusk and dawn, set by how far the Sun is below the horizon: civil twilight to 6° (still light enough to be outside), nautical twilight to 12° (the horizon fades at sea) and astronomical twilight to 18°, after which the sky is fully dark. On summer nights far from the equator the Sun may never sink 18°, so there is no true night.
How do I read the 24-hour sun dial?
Noon is at the top and midnight at the bottom, so the Sun rises on the left and sets on the right. Each colour is one stage of light, explained in the legend, and the figure in the middle is the day length. The positions follow the local clock, so on a daylight-saving day they still match the time you see.
